Public Art
Our Public Art Committee is charged with creating and supporting public art projects in Bangor.
The committee is responsible for site selection and coordination of murals as well as other arts in open and public spaces throughout Bangor.
Current Projects
Abe Lincoln School Mural - Coming September 2024
We are helping bring public art and education about the importance of nature and pollinators to local schools, beginning with Abraham Lincoln School. Local artists will collaborate with teachers and students to paint a public facing mural on their school.
Penobscot River Ecology Mural - Coming Summer 2025
We are collaborating with scientists and artists at the University of Maine to create a mural in Bangor highlighting the importance of freshwater mussels, migratory fish, and river ecosystems. Installation is planned for early Summer 2025 near the Penobscot River waterfront.
Completed Projects
Spring Woods Mural
We commissioned Maine-based artist, Jared Goulette aka The Color Wizard to create a multi-story mural on Hammond Street in Downtown Bangor depicting the Maine forest in spring.
Hammond Street Ground Mural -
We partnered with Wabanaki Public Health & Wellness to create Bangor's 1st large street mural to calm traffic and beautify a busy section of road in Downtown Bangor.
Mural Fun Run - 2024
We held our very first Mural Fun Run on May 11, 2024. Over 40 runners and walkers visited 9 of the beautiful murals in Bangor stopping in at each to hear about its history and meaning of each mural, in some cases meeting the artist as they touched up their creations, and to receive a totally rad button that includes an image of the mural! The route was ~ two miles, and all paces and faces were welcome.
The One Native Lupine Mural
A 2-story mural near Downtown Bangor completed in fall 2023, designed and painted by high school art students depicting Maine's one species of native lupine.
The Good of the Hive
Our first major project, a multi-story mural in Downtown Bangor completed in summer 2023, features the art of Matt Willey.
